Children & Vegetables?
26 11 2007Do children and vegetables really go together??
Please tell me I am not the only one who bribes their children to eat a very small portion of vegies. I was just watching them - the elder one nearly gagged on 2 small spoonfulls of peas! He has only recenlty agreed to try peas, tells me he likes them? Not sure who read my posting on Sensory Defensiveness but trying new food is linked to that. Anyways my kids only get dessert if they eat the allocated amount of veg. Might be 2 spoons of peas, 4 pieces of potato or 3 pieces of carrot. And that really is about the extent of it. If they eat all of the allocation they get their choice, usually ice cream or an ice block - am I defeating the purpose?
Don’t tell me to hide the veg in something either. If they can see bits of green in anything it gets picked out and they won’t eat the rest of the food untill the green is gone! Plus that stuff about if they are hungry enough - no way! My kids would rather go without dinner than eat something they THINK they don’t like. Many times they just say "Yuk! I don’t like it!" even without trying it. I’m a bit over arguing with a 6 & a 4 year old.
I feel like a bad mum sometimes. I want to do the right thing by them, but just what is the right thing?? Will they grow out of it? That’s what I’m hoping…

Oh I hear you - but with Charley it’s different. She’ll eat her vegies, as long as I don’t insist on it. The second I ask her to eat something, it’s “I don’t like it”. I find that if I just leave it lying around, it tends to disappear.
